Check the resolution you will actually print

Journal guidelines often call image resolution “DPI”. For a digital image, the calculation here is pixels per inch (PPI). It depends on the final size on the page, not just a number stored inside the file.

Effective PPI = pixel width ÷ print width in inches
1200 px ÷ 4 in = 300 PPI
1200 px ÷ 8 in = 150 PPI

From a PowerPoint figure to a checked export

  1. Find your final figure width and resolution requirement in the journal’s author instructions.
  2. Export the figure from its source as PNG or JPEG, then select that file above.
  3. Enter the target size. If resolution is low, follow the export guide, then check the new file again.

Image DPI checker: common questions

How do I check image DPI online?

Choose a PNG or JPG above. The checker reads available density metadata, then calculates effective PPI from the image’s pixel width and your intended print width. You can download the results as a text report without signing in.

Is my image 300 DPI if the file says 300?

A stored 300 DPI tag is not enough. A 1200-pixel-wide image has 300 PPI at 4 inches, but only 150 PPI at 8 inches. Enter the final figure width to check the pixel count against your target.

What if DPI is not specified?

Missing metadata means the density tag is unavailable, not that the picture is low quality. Pixel dimensions still let you calculate effective resolution at a chosen print size. This checker does not add or rewrite metadata.

Does changing DPI improve image quality?

Changing a tag does not add detail. Resampling can add pixels without recovering the original detail. For a low-resolution figure, return to the original chart, photograph or slide and export again. A flattened image can contain blurry panels even when its overall pixel count passes.

Do all journals require 300 DPI?

No. Requirements vary by journal, figure type and submission stage. Photographs, combination figures and line drawings can have different thresholds. Set the target from the current instructions for your journal; the presets are examples, not a journal-specific ruleset.

Can I check PDF, TIFF, SVG or PowerPoint files?

This version reads PNG and JPEG only, up to 20 MB and 40 megapixels. Export a PNG or JPEG copy to inspect its resolution. That result applies to the exported copy, not to the original PDF, TIFF, SVG or PPTX. Vector files and embedded images need different checks.

Are unpublished figures uploaded or used by AI?

The checker reads the selected file in your browser. Image bytes, filenames and check reports are not sent to our server or an AI provider. Clearing the image or leaving the page removes the tool’s reference to the file. A report you download remains on your device.
