People searching for a BioRender alternative may be solving different problems: subscription cost, publication licensing, manual assembly time, or simply finding a few reusable scientific assets. Separate AI drafting, asset libraries, vector editing and licensing before choosing.

01

LitFigure

Adatto a: Researchers who want a fast mechanism, experimental workflow or graphical abstract draft.

Workflow
Generate a complete draft from research text, then revise it with natural-language instructions.
Ingresso costi
Starter credits after email verification; subscriptions cover higher usage.
Editing ed export
Structured documents expose editable objects; whole-image SVG/PPTX editability depends on document type.
Compromesso
AI drafts require human review, and complex revisions can affect areas you did not target.

Mind the Graph

Adatto a: Researchers who want to choose assets, control layout and use common journal export formats.

Workflow
Scientific illustrations, templates and drag-and-drop editing, with AI features also advertised.
Ingresso costi
A free entry point is available; watermark-free exports and some advanced features require an upgrade.
Editing ed export
Its official page lists editable SVG plus PNG, PDF, SVG and TIFF export options.
Compromesso
Feature and export access depends on the current plan, so verify before purchase.

FigureLabs

Adatto a: People who want to compare model outputs and continue editing in another design tool.

Workflow
Generate scientific illustrations with multiple image models, then use vectorization and canvas tools.
Ingresso costi
Its pricing page lists free credits and several paid plans.
Editing ed export
SVG, PPTX and a built-in canvas are listed for selected paid plans.
Compromesso
Test model output, vector quality and publication claims against your own task and journal policy.

Inkscape + Bioicons

Adatto a: Researchers willing to compose manually in exchange for path-level control and open tooling.

Workflow
An open-source vector editor paired with downloadable scientific SVG assets.
Ingresso costi
The editor and asset library can be used without a subscription.
Editing ed export
Control SVG paths, text, layers and layout manually.
Compromesso
You build the composition yourself, and Bioicons assets use different licenses that must be checked individually.

NIH BioArt Source

Adatto a: Researchers looking for official-source assets for cells, viruses, proteins, equipment and related topics.

Workflow
A NIAID library of science and medical vectors, icons and brushes.
Ingresso costi
The official site describes the collection as free.
Editing ed export
Download assets and arrange them in PowerPoint, Inkscape or another design application.
Compromesso
It is an asset source, not a complete figure workspace; review the relevant terms before use.

SciDraw

Adatto a: Researchers searching for a specific scientific object and comfortable finishing the figure in another editor.

Workflow
Community-contributed scientific illustrations that can be downloaded and assembled elsewhere.
Ingresso costi
Assets can be browsed and downloaded without a subscription.
Editing ed export
Edit and compose the downloaded assets in an external vector or presentation tool.

Free, open source and publishable are different questions

A free plan may limit resolution, watermark removal, export format or publication use. Open-source software does not mean every imported asset has the same license. A paid plan does not automatically satisfy a journal’s AI policy. Verify the software license, each asset license, AI-use rules and the final file format separately.

Bioicons is a useful example: its site includes assets under CC0, CC BY, CC BY-SA, MIT, BSD and other licenses, so the entire collection should not be treated as attribution-free.

Domande frequenti

Is there a completely free alternative to BioRender?

For manual composition, Inkscape combined with Bioicons, NIH BioArt Source or SciDraw is a practical free route. These are not one-to-one BioRender replacements; you select the assets and build the composition yourself.

Which BioRender alternative is best for AI scientific figures?

LitFigure focuses on complete drafts from research text and prompt-based revision. FigureLabs offers access to multiple image models and vectorization tools. BioRender itself now includes AI generation and editing. Test the same research task in each workflow.

Can I publish a figure made with a free tool?

Free access does not automatically grant publication rights. Check each asset license, attribution requirement, the target journal’s AI policy, and the dimensions and format of the final export.

How should I choose a scientific figure tool?

First decide whether you need a complete AI draft, an asset library, manual vector control or data plotting. Then compare label accuracy, scientific relationships, local edits, exports and licensing with the same research content.
